TOWN PROFILE

As a local authority, the Municipality of Outjo is situated in the North-west of Namibia, the small South-western in Africa with a population of nearly 2 million inhabitants. Outjo lies on the junction of C38 and C39,112km south of the world famous Etosha National Park. It serves as a gateway to the Etosha National Park as well as to various tourism attractions such as the Ugab Terraces, the Rock finger, the volcanic mountain area and the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, the Petrified Forest, the Epupa Waterfalls and many more in the north western of Namibia.

POPULATION AND SIZE

The town commonage covers area of about 10 764 hectares with a steady growing population of 9590 inhabitants of which 5009 are male and 4581 are female and 2132 households (average household size = 4.2). The population growth rate for the past 15 years is 1.9%. The immigrants with permanent residence permit and works permits close to 0.09%. No refugees in Outjo local authority area. Concerning population composition according to religion, in Outjo all inhabitants are Christians with different denominations of about 13 churches. Although the official language is English, a great number of people in the area speak Damara-Nama, Otjiherero, Otjiwambo, Africaans and German.

Outjo is located in Kunene Region and 70km west Otjiwarongo, 325km northwest of Windhoek, the Capital City of Namibia, 450km northeast of Walvis Bay, the harbour town of Namibia and 498km southwest of Ondangwa.Outjo has a subtropical climate, with very hot summers of above 30 degrees Celsius and the winter days are usually warm, but nights turn cold, with frost sometimes in the mornings. The average rainfall is 480mm per annum.
